Rationale

Physicists require a firm basic knowledge of time-dependent electromagnetism, involving advanced applications and their relevance to physical phenomena.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • state and manipulate Maxwell's equations Fresnel's equations
  • find plane wave solutions for isotropic media with boundaries
  • apply Maxwell's equations to charges moving with relativistic velocities and discuss the consequent radiation effects
  • describe the scattering of electromagnetic radiation by atoms and molecules
