Aims

To satisfy the objectives for the 'with European Study' programme, the student will follow an agreed timetable of language and physics, or theoretical physics, modules while abroad.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students, returning from their year abroad in Europe will be proficient in the language of their host country and have developed their knowledge of physics by participating in a university degree programme.

Transferable Skills

Fluency in a foreign language, ability to understand and work in a European academic and cultural context.

Learning and Teaching Methods

Lectures, laboratory sessions, problem sessions

Assignments

Follow host institution's conventions

Assessment

Examinations administered by the host institutions

Syllabus Plan and Content

While abroad the student will follow an agreed timetable of language and physics, or theoretical physics, modules (the latter being equivalent to a mixture of level 2 and 3 physics modules at Exeter). These will be selected in consultation with the host institution and the student, in accordance with the University code of good practice for student study abroad. Of the 45 ECTS credits represented by this module, a minimum of 25 must be for physics modules and preferentially 20 for language modules. If the full 20 ECTS credits of language is not available then the student will take a mixture of language and physics or theoretical physics modules. If no language course is available the student will take only physics or theoretical physics modules.

In order to satisfy accreditation requirements, the agreed curriculum for this module must include (by guided self-study if necessary) the topics of:

  1. Optics
    1. Geometrical optics to the level of simple optical systems
    2. Interference and diffraction at single and multiple apertures
    3. Dispersion by prisms and diffraction gratings
    4. Optical Cavities and laser action
