Rules for Use of School of Physics Computing Facilities
-
University Regulations apply to Department computing facillities.
-
Department facilities are for use only by students and staff of the Department.
Others must obtain written permission from the Head of Department, or the
Computing Laboratory Co-ordinator.
-
No food or drink is to be consumed while using computers.
-
All users must login to the workstation at the start of a session and logout before leaving their terminal.
-
The software packages on workstations are copyright. Do not copy them without obtaining permission.
-
The computer facilties are for real work only, do not disturb other people. Playing games is banned.
-
Leave your workstation in a tidy condition. Don't 'Shutdown' the workstation because this
interfers with research jobs which run during idle-time.
-
Workstations are connected to a central alarm system and must not be moved from their normal positions on the desks.
-
You must not load or use software written by others that has not been approved by the
Computing Laboratory Co-ordinator. You must not write or use software that is intended
to be a game, or that interferes with the machines' hardware or software in ways that
affect the normal use of the workstations.
-
Activity monitoring software will be in use from time to time. Users' software and data
on these machines are therefore neither secure nor confidential.
-
Space on the fileserver is limited and it should be used to store only original
source material. Automated scripts may periodically discard files that are, or
appear to be, inappropriate. A maximum of 5GB per user may be stored on the
remote home-directory servers (cytosine1 & cytosine2).
-
Undergraduates may use workstations in PHY/302 and elsewhere in the Physics Building during normal working days
in term time from when it is unlocked in the morning at about 0800hrs until
it is locked in the evening just before 1800hrs. Providing usage justifies
the cost of supervision, during Weeks T1:00-12 and T2:00-12
the room will be avilable on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 1800 and 2100hrs.
The room is also normally unlocked during the weeks immediately before and after term.
Exceptions to this rule must be authorised by the
Computing Laboratory Co-ordinator.
Persons who do not observe the above rules are likely to be banned from using the
facilities and risk disciplinary proceedings that could jeopardize their position
at the University or result in heavy fines.
