In common with a growing number of sites, remote access is via
is via ssh which encrypts
all the network traffic, including passwords.
It is essential that you log in directly from the machine you are
sitting in front of and do not first log into another machine and
then use ssh to login from there.
Ssh login is available either from Linux/Unix, MS Windows or via a
Java plugin for Internet Explorer.
ssh version 2
[ This is currently on deimos and the astro desktops.]
We are moving over to using ssh version 2 on our machines. In
principle ssh and scp should be able to work out whether the remote
hosts uses ssh1 or ssh2. If this doesn't work:
- If you have problems logging from one of our machines to a
remote site try using ssh1.
- If you have problems logging in from a remote site to one of
our machines try
specifying version2. Depending on the configuration of the
remote site there might be a command ssh2 or you might
need to type ssh -2.
