Aims

The role of a professional radiographer is high-quality patient care. Radiographers must not just know what professional conduct is, they must behave in this way both instinctively and at all times. This requires appropriately developed interpersonal skills, and an understanding of aspects of sociology and psychology as they apply to the interprofessional clinical context.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to:

  • describe key psychological and sociological concepts;
  • relate psychological and sociological concepts to health;
  • describe the role of psychological concepts and key sociological concepts in the context of contemporary healthcare practice;
  • describe and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills;
  • describe the role of interprofessional working in relation to patient care;
  • describe their role as a healthcare practitioner in relation to patient care;

  • use appropriate sources of information to develop own knowledge;
  • use professional literature and cite it correctly;

Personal and Key Skills

  • communicate and report information effectively;
  • work effectively as part of a team;
  • participate actively in seminars and workshops.

Learning and Teaching Methods

Lectures (24×1hour), seminars and workshops (16×1hour), directed background reading.

Assignments

Preparation of oral presentation; preparation of reports; directed background reading.

Assessment

One 2-hour examination (50% week 20); one 15 minute individual presentation (10% weeks 18-20); one 1500 word report (40% week 15).

    3. Basic concepts in mental health.
    4. Social psychology, health psychology including stress and concordance.
    5. Relationship of psychological states to health and altered function.
  2. Sociology
    1. Social inequalities and their impact upon health.
    2. Health inequalities.
    3. Equality and diversity.
  3. Interpersonal Skills
    1. Principles of communication.
    2. Reflective practice.
    3. Self-awareness and self-care.
  4. Professional Issues
    1. Types of consent.
    2. Professionalism, professional ethics, accountability and duty of care.
    3. Role of state-registration, the Health Professions Council and professional bodies.
    4. Continuing professional development.
    5. Interprofessional working; impact on patient care.
    6. Interprofessional learning; laying the foundation for interdisciplinary teamwork.

Formative Mechanisms
