PhD. Admissions and fully-funded PhD. places

The School of Physics was ranked 8th in the UK for world-leading and internationally excellent research1.

Following our success in the recent Research Assessment Exercise, the School of Physics has a number of PhD. projects offering full fees and living expenses. These are open to applicants who have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2(i) classification in a Physics-based degree subject or equivalent overseas qualification.

Specific projects

Specific fully-funded projects will be listed on this page as they become available.

Flexible projects

The School of Physics also has a number of other fully-funded PhD places, funded by UK Research Councils and other bodies, with considerable flexibility concerning the precise area of research.

These are also suitable for applicants who meet our academic requirements and who have secured independent funding.

For details see our page of flexible, fully-funded PhD places.

Note that only a few of these flexible projects will be funded in a given year, so it is a good idea to list several projects in order of preference when applying for these projects.
