DESCRIPTION – summary of the module content (100 words)

This is a Physics Core module taken at a study-abroad host institutions. The module(s) at the host institution that contribute to this module must be approved by the Stage 3 Study Abroad Co-ordinator.

MODULE AIMS – intentions of the module

This module aims to provide a basic introduction to the quantum aspects that determine the properties of macroscopic materials and forms the foundation for a variety of applications in Stage 4.

 On successful completion of this module you should be able to:

Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:

  1. discuss the classification of solids in elementary terms;
  2. give a qualitative description of the Fermi surface in metals, the band structure of semiconductors and impurity states in semiconductors;
  3. compare and contrast the transport, optical and phonon properties of metals and semiconductors;
  4. describe the magnetic and optical properties of solids;

Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:

  1. solve mathematical problems;

Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge:

  1. adapt to and learn from the educational frameworks and conventions of an overseas university.

The syllabus should match, as far as reasonably practical, the contents of PHYM003 (Condensed Matter II) and must satisfy Institute of Physics Accreditation requirements and must not duplicate modules that have already been taken, or will be taken in the future, as part of the degree.

    1. Ferrimagnetism and antiferromagnetism.
    2. Spin waves and magnons.
    3. Giant magneto-resistance.
