Radiography Elective Regulations
The clinical placement elective is a component of the Stage 3 Practice Placement and is described in the module description for PAM3005. This document specifies the additional regulations and procedures applicable to elective placements in radiography.
Regulations for All Elective Placements
- Electives may only be taken in UK hospitals regulated by the Care Quality Commission.
- Students are responsible for arranging their own electives. Because all sites have limited capacity, students must not assume that they may return to their stage 3 placement site by default.
- The Code of Practice for Clinical Placements applies fully to elective placements.
- For identification purposes, students must carry their University card with them on the first day, and throughout, their elective placement.
Regulations for Elective Placements in Non-Partnership Hospitals
For elective placements undertaken in a non-partnership Hospital
(i.e. in an establishment not listed in the Locations section of the Code of Practice for Clinical Placements) students must:
- Realise that they have personal responsibility for any arrangement they make with a non-partnership hospital. This includes checking the appropriateness of any honorary contract. If a decision is made to undertake a placement in the absence of such a contract, students must ensure that any risks not covered by their own insurance are acceptable (see also the section
Indemnity Insurance in the Code of Practice for Clinical Placements).
- Comply with the requirements of the hospital they are wishing to attend for their elective, e.g. by providing evidence of immunisation status, etc..
The Clinical Placement Coordinator will provide the elective site(s):
- with a copy of the Radiography Elective Information for Host Departments which includes a summary of the University of Exeter's Public Liability insurance as it applies to BSc (Hons) Medical Imaging (Diagnostic Radiography) students on clinical placements;
- a letter containing the student's University number which the site will use as part of their identity checking process (see above).
Procedure for Arranging Elective Placements
Students may not commence an elective placement without the written agreement the Clinical Placement Coordinator. To obtain this they must submit to the School Student Services office a correctly completed Elective Information Form and, once approval in principle has been given, an Elective Evidence Form to which must be attached:
- letter(s) from an appropriate member of staff within the placement department(s) confirming and agreeing to the dates of the elective placement(s)
- evidence of professional indemnity insurance (e.g. valid student membership card for the Society of Radiographers)
- In the case of non-partnership hospitals, evidence that the host hospital's Employer's Liability and Public Liability insurance will cover them during their elective placement, e.g. an honorary contract.
