Radiography Elective Information for Host Departments

This information sheet is for departments supporting elective students at non-partnership sites (i.e. with whom we do not hold Service Level Agreements)

Aims of Elective Placement

Elective placements form part of Exeter students' stage 3 (i.e. third and final year) clinical placement module. Full details of this are given in the PAM3005 module description <http://newton.ex.ac.uk/handbook/modules/PAM3005.html> and more general information about the BSc (Hons) Medical Imaging (Diagnostic Radiography) programme is given in the full programme specification <http://newton.ex.ac.uk/handbook/progspecs/template.html?B821>.

Students from Exeter taking electives have already passed all the clinical components of the programme and the final clinical requirement before they graduate is to complete their elective placements successfully.

Within our programme, the purpose of the elective period is to enable students to spend the immediate period prior to graduation revisiting, updating and extending the clinical skills they have previously acquired. We hope this will make their transition from student to practioner smooth and rapid when they start work.

Student Conduct on Elective Placement

During their elective placements, Exeter students must comply with our Code of Practice for Clinical Placements <http://newton.ex.ac.uk/handbook/Radiog-placements.html>. Please advise us without delay of any breaches of this Code, including non-attendance.

Insurance

In the absence of an existing Hospital-University Service Level Agreement, students are advised to check the extent to which the hospital Employer's and/or Public Liability insurance will cover them if they are injured or involved in an incident while on placement. This is normally established by the issue of an honorary contract, or a letter from the hospital setting out the placement arrangements.

The University holds insurance covering its liability for third-party claims arising from the actions of its students at approved placement sites.

Fitness to Practice

All students registered on the the programme undergo regular Occupational Health Monitoring to ensure that they are fit for practice within the healthcare / hospital environment. Students are given certificates once they have undergone required courses of immunisation and they will supply copies of these on request.

All students were accepted onto the programme were subject to an enhanced CRB check which had to be passed outright or be deemed acceptable by the University under its CRB Code of Practice.

In addition, all students sign an Annual Declaration at the start of each academic year, as part of the re-registration process, stating that there have been no changes to their health or good character that would affect their ability to practise as an undergraduate radiographer.
