The viva voce examination following each period of practice placement will normally last 15 minutes. Marks will be recorded on the viva pro-forma. This examination may assess any of the intended learning outcomes of the practice placement module and, in particular, the ability of the student to relate the underlying theory to practice.
Students should therefore refer to the intended learning outcomes of the placement module as well as the 'Aims and Objectives' document for the placement. Links to these documents can be found on on the Radiography Placement Documents and Forms page of the Medical Imaging Handbook.
The overall mark for this assessment (out of 100) is obtained by examining four topics linked to the intended learning outcomes of the module and allocating marks on the following scale:
| Mark Range | Viva Performance |
|---|---|
| 22 - 25 | In depth knowledge and a thorough understanding of all aspects which allows questions to be answered accurately and fluently and the discussion to be extended with confidence into difficult or unfamiliar areas. |
| 18 - 21 | Outcome at excellent level. In depth knowledge and a thorough understanding of most aspects, with some ability to extend the discussion into difficult or unfamiliar areas. |
| 15 - 17 | Outcome at focal level. Knowledge and understanding of most aspects in some depth, with the ability to extend the discussion so as to make relevant links between theory and clinical practice. |
| 13 - 14 | Adequate knowledge and understanding of most aspects, with some ability to extend the discussion so as to make relevant links between theory and clinical practice. |
| 10 - 12 | Outcome at threshold level. Demonstrates a relatively superficial knowledge and understanding of most aspects, with the ability to make relatively simple links between theory and clinical practice. |
| 5 - 9 | Little knowledge or understanding shown. Unable to make relevant links between theory and clinical practice. |
| 0 - 4 | No knowledge or understanding demonstrated. |
The marks for this assessment contribute to the overall module mark in proportion to the weighting indicated in the applicable module description.
