Progression Requirements of the Research Student Training Programme

In accordance with University practice, PhD students will initially be registered for an MPhil degree, and, subject to satisfactory progress, will have their registration upgraded to PhD at the end of their first year (or full-time equivalent).

All students are required to complete the activities specified by the Research Student Training Programme, unless they receive exemption from some parts from the Head of School in recognition of previous training or experience. Unsatisfactory performance may result in the student not being registered for the following year, and will disqualify them from demonstrating or other teaching activities.

Students are required to submit written work within the time-scale stipulated in the Postgraduate Research Handbook and to give their oral presentations at the time stipulated. The pass mark for written work is 50%. Standard University Penalties are applied to late and/or plagiarised work.

Lectures

Students are required to attend all lectures.

Written Reports

Students failing to submit either of the written reports without adequate reason will not be allowed to register for the following year.

Literature Review

Students producing unsatisfactory literature reviews will be asked to undertake a further remedial plan of work specified by Research Committee. This is in addition to the progress report. The student's progress will then be reviewed in week T2:11. If progress remains unsatisfactory, the student will be deregistered.

Progress Report

Assessors who determine a progress report to be unsatisfactory will provide the student concerned with a list of corrections setting a deadline for completion of these. If the resubmitted progress report remains unsatisfactory, the student will not be allowed to register for the following year.

Presentations

Students giving unsatisfactory presentations will be asked to undertake a remedial plan of work specified by Research Committee, including a new presentation. The student's progress will then be reviewed in within 10 weeks of the original presentation. If progress remains unsatisfactory, the student will be deregistered. Students failing to give presentations, without adequate reason, will be required to do at a time specified by Research Committee. Students who repeatedly fail to give presentations will be deregistered.

Appeals

Students may appeal against decisions regarding satisfactory progress and continued registration to the Head of School in the first instance.
