Code of Good Practice for Supervision of Research Students in Physics and Astronomy

Physics and Astronomy adheres to:

Frequency of Contact with Supervisor

The nature and frequency of contact between student and supervisor will vary from research project to research project, but supervisors are normally expected to meet full-time research students at least once per week (excluding holiday periods for both students and supervisors). If the supervisor has to be away from Exeter for a more prolonged period, then s/he should organise alternative supervision arrangements which must be approved by the Director of Research.

For a part-time student working at Exeter the frequency of meetings should normally be half that for full-time. For a part-time student based outside Exeter the frequency will be determined by an individual agreement with the supervisor at Exeter, the Director of Research, and the other institution involved.

Annual Research Student Monitoring Procedures

In accordance with the College's Code of Good Practice (COGP), we require three formal monitoring meetings each academic year between student and supervisor, and three between student and mentor. A record of each meeting must be kept using the appropriate form (below).

The Postgraduate Research Administrator will issue reminders in advance of each meeting. Students must complete the appropriate form in advance of their meeting. This be the starting point for the discussion and the agreed comments should be signed by both parties to the meeting. An inability to agree the comments will be indicated by an unsigned form.
