The [University] Guidelines to Heads of Department in respect of Workloads of Academic Staff require the Department to have an 'open, agreed and equitable procedures for the allocation of duties'. Staff may appeal against perceived excessive or unfair loads to the Head of Discipline in the first instance and, if agreement is not reached, to a Dean. The following job descriptions identify the various devolved duties.
Accurate job descriptions also have an important role the Department's compliance with the [University] Policy on Protection of Dignity at Work and Study by clarifying the responsibilities of individuals. They should protect junior staff from senior staff 'over-delegating' their own work, and protect senior staff from accusations of 'bullying' when, in fact, they have behaved quite reasonably. Therefore, holders of each post are expected to review their job descriptions approximately once per year and propose helpful amendments. Job descriptions should be clear and accurate and detailed to the point that another member of staff could take over the job, should the need arise. Significant amendments to job descriptions must be approved by the Head of Department.
The Deparment expects staff assigned tasks to perform them diligently, on time and to a good standard, and to seek advice and assistance from others as appropriate. The Department also expects all staff to co-operate with colleagues undertaking these tasks, for example by providing them with requested material in an appropriate form, by the specified deadlines.
