Information Technology Facilities

The University Information Technology Services manages a wide range of computing facilities and services that are available to all members of the University. In order to use any computing services at Exeter you must be registered with them and agree to abide by the relevant University IT Regulations and Policies.

Note: When you leave the University your access to its computing facilities will cease, and your files and email will be irrevocably deleted soon afterwards. You must therefore make arrangements for the transfer of important data before leaving.

The Department provides additional facilities for the exclusive use of its own members to supplement those available from IT services.

Personal WWW Pages

Persons who wish to publish their own personal WWW pages, etc. may do so and will find the University's Web Support pages a useful source of information and guidance.

Email

Students will receive their email University address as part of the registration procedure. The recommended and supported way to access email is to use the Webmail service It has comprehensive help pages, but students who are not familiar with using email should ask their tutor for advice.

The Computer Laboratory in Physics

Apple Mac computers and printers are provided for use by students and staff in Room PHY/309 and at various other locations throughout the Physics Building. Home-directories are stored on one of the two cytosine servers. These may be accessed from outside the University by using the VPN sevice. See the News about Computer Facilities section of this handbook for more information.

Other Computer Facilities in the Physics Building

The Department's teaching laboratories are equipped with a mix of IBM compatible PC's running Windows and Apple Macs. WiFi is available throughout the building.
