About the School of Physics

The School of Physics at the University of Exeter is a dynamic and thriving teaching and research centre comprising some 450 undergraduates, 45 postgraduate students, 40 academic staff, 25 researchers and 25 support staff. The School is part of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

For undergraduates we offer 14 Physics Degree programmes and a BSc Medical Imaging (Diagnostic Radiography) programme.

The School of Physics also has a number of funded PhD places for suitably-qualified students with considerable flexibility concerning the precise area of research.

We have 4 strong research groups in key areas of contemporary physics:

Astrophysics

Biomedical physics

Electromagnetic materials

Quantum systems and nanomaterials

All facilities except our MRI centre are contained within the one building, from teaching and research laboratories to seminar rooms and computing.

We have made significant investment in teaching and research facilities with new refurbishment of undergraduate teaching laboratories (430 sq m) as well as some 30% of our research laboratory space. Our Astrophysicists have taken ownership of a new £1M supercomputer and other specialist facilities include a computer controlled observatory, a new multiphoton microscopy and spectroscopy suite, a focused ion-beam etching machine providing state-of-the-art nano-fabrication capability, a new X-ray suite, a suite of lasers including an ultrafast laser, a helium liquefier to support our low temperature research projects, and purpose built workshops.

Professor Tim Naylor is the Head of School.
